YSA and Hasbro Launch Campaign That Calls on Youth to Be Catalysts to Keep Kindness Rising

Today the Kindness Rising campaign, powered by YSA’s #LeadASAP initiative and sponsored by Hasbro’s philanthropic initiative, BE FEARLESS BE KIND, launches to encourage youth to stand up for others, be inclusive, and make a difference through service projects or kind acts.

We can see examples of kindness every day in ways big and small, from the student who stands up for a peer who is being bullied, to groups of youth fundraising for the victims of the recent hurricanes, to kids sending letters to first responders in Las Vegas to thank them for what they do every day. Through service projects or kind acts, young people develop empathy, build powerful life skills and can be the catalysts to keep Kindness Rising!

The campaign encourages youth to put their empathy into action through service and make a difference in their communities.

From today through Dec. 20, young people, educators, parents and caring adults everywhere can take BE FEARLESS BE KIND pledge, put that pledge into action, and show the impact of their work. The campaign website features project ideas and resources from YSA to help youth plan and implement projects to address community issues and spread kindness.

There are many examples of young people who are already doing this important work, and can serve as inspiration for other youth who might want to get involved but don’t know how. Take Josh Kaplan, 2016 Hasbro Community Action Hero. Josh decided to combine his love of sports with his interest in helping kids with intellectual disabilities, creating GOALS (Giving Opportunities to All who Love Soccer). The program provides an opportunity for social interaction between youth with and without disabilities, helping each group develop empathy and understanding for the other–all while having fun!

“At YSA we believe that service supports youth in developing the skills necessary to make a difference in their community and succeed in school, work and life,” said Steve Culbertson, president & CEO of YSA. “Josh is a perfect example of a young person who is working to bridge differences and address a legitimate community need, while also learning powerful life skills. We are thrilled to partner with Hasbro to equip youth around the world to do the same.”

For everyone who takes the pledge, Hasbro will donate a toy or game to Toys for Tots for up to 250,000 for children in need this holiday season. Plus, participants who complete a service project and show their impact at YSA.org/KindnessRising will be considered for grants. Ten participants will receive a $250 grant.

“As a company dedicated to making the world a better place for children and their families, Hasbro’s BE FEARLESS BE KIND philanthropic initiative is proud to sponsor the Kindness Rising campaign in partnership with YSA’s #LeadASAP initiative,” said Karen Davis, senior vice president of Global Philanthropy and Social Impact at Hasbro. “The campaign encourages youth to put their empathy into action through service and make a difference in their communities.”

About #LeadASAP

#LeadASAP is YSA’s primary initiative to activate youth to find their voice, take action, and improve their communities this school year through four main youth-led project strategies: Awareness, Service, Advocacy and Philanthropy (ASAP). Through service to their community, youth gain powerful 21st century skills like empathy, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication – skills they need to be successful in school, work, and life. On top of that, each youth-led ASAP project will impact one of the United Nations’ 17 Global Goals.

YSA works with schools, youth development organizations, and community based organizations to call on youth to #LeadASAP by providing inspiring campaigns and grants, and delivering training, technical assistance, and recognition to support quality youth-led ASAP project experiences. The goal of the #LeadASAP initiative is to activate 500,000 youth (30% from underserved communities) through 10,000 youth-led service projects this school year.
